I've been thinking about this one since I saw it the other day and I've only been able to narrow it down to 3. I'm horrible at picking favorites for just about everything, you can slap me around for it but it won't do any good. Anywho, in no particular order they are Anne Rice, Neil Gaiman and George R. R. Martin. Actually there is a certain order there, and I don't know what the hell I was saying, as that's the order I was first introduced to their books. Anyone who's been poking around these parts for a while won't be surprised by these names, some days it seems like they're damn near all I ever talk about.
All of these writers have amazing characters, that's a given, but here's a few things that make them stand apart from others I've read.
Anne Rice:
Her ability to build a scene. It's like she's literally splashing paint on the canvas and that's the way I envision much of her work. I was hooked by Interview with the Vampire and I've never looked back. I've only recently gotten into her books beyond VC and MW series, although they've been sitting on my shelf for quite awhile, and they're just as good.
Neil Gaiman:
His ability to turn a phrase that completely describes the moment. He has that certain touch and can really nail down a scene or character in just a few words. Sometimes I'll have to literally stop reading for a moment to savor these moments. I got hooked with Neverwhere, still my favorite by the way, and I've been eating up his work ever since. His stories cover such a wide range of content and style yet they always seem to come out amazing.
George R. R. Martin:
His ability to take a story of such enormous scope and still make it comprehensible. The Song of Ice and Fire series must have about a dozen story lines moving forward at any one time, yet he still finds a way to make me feel like I'm wandering through his world right alongside him without being distracted. The intimate details combined with the utter vastness would seem like a contradiction bound for failure but they're a great combination here.
That's all I'm going to say on the subject for now, even though I could probably babble on for hours and bore you to tears, oh I'm serious, to tears I say.
That turned into a really long post. It was supposed to be short. Honest.

As for Anne Rice I would heartily suggest the Vampire Chronicles, although if you get hooked on it you'll have about a dozen books to get through for the series.
